Kerala Govt. Sanctions Two Additional Seats for Transgender Students in Universities and Colleges

The government of Kerala has taken a historic decision by sanctioningtwo additional seatsfortransgender studentsin all the courses offered by universities and colleges across the state. The decision of Kerala government can be considered as a progressive step towards inclusive education.

Social Justice Department of Keralahad put up the proposal before the government seeking approval for two additional seats for transgender students in universities and colleges. The state government has responded positively and has approved the proposal. The state government is receiving wide appreciation for its unique move.

The official order issued by the state government stated that transgender students are often forced to discontinue their studies or fail to take up admission in academic institutes due tosocietal issues.Even though higher learning institutes reserve seats for transgender students, they are not sufficient to meet the demand. Therefore, the state government has decided to sanction two additional seats in all the courses for transgender students, the order explained.

The state government has further issued the order toDirectorate of Collegiate Educationand state-run universities.

The demand for additional seats for transgender students evolved when a few transgender students did not get merit-based admission at a popular college located in Ernakulam. These students approached the Social Justice Department seeking justice. Finally, all the associated departments responded positively towards the move and played a vital role in supporting inclusive education.
