: Due to heavy rains that triggered widespread waterlogging and disrupted transport services in Kolkata on September 23, schools were shut down.
West Bengal State Education Minister Bratya Basu announced school holidays on September 24
as well as heavy rain is expected. Teachers and non-teaching staff will be allowed to work from home.
The heavy downpour led to waterlogging in many low-lying areas of the city, with areas like Garia Kamdahari recording 332 mm of rain, Jodhpur Park 285 mm, and Kalighat 280 mm. The rains caused significant disruptions in the city, affecting train and Metro services due to waterlogged tracks. Services on the Circular Railway line were suspended, and train movement in the Sealdah south section was halted.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of further heavy rainfall in the southern districts of West Bengal, including Purba and Paschim Medinipur, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, and Bankura, until Wednesday. Several schools declared holidays due to heavy rains and waterlogged streets. The IMD issued red and orange alerts across West Bengal.
