The classes of the third and fifth semester of three-year LLB course, at the Department of Law in Panjab University, are getting affected due to the absence of 18 part-time/guest faculty, since the beginning of the new session on July 18.

The department has 14 part-time/guest faculties, whose renewal of contracts have to be approved by the higher authorities. The vacant posts of four part-time teachers are also needed to be advertised in the media again.

The chairman of the Department of Law, PU said that they have not received the approval for the 14 part-time/guest faculty teachers to continue. They had sent the request on July 7 to VC office and so far have given three reminders, but till now nothing has been done. It was only after the objections were raised then the file was sent to the higher authorities for approval. In the absence, of these faculty members, the classes are bound to get affected.

When the matter was brought to the notice of the vice-chancellor of the university, he said that he will meet the chairperson of the department of laws, along with Dean University Instructions (DUI) to discuss the matter. He termed the matter as very unfortunate.

Surprisingly the VC said that there is adequate faculty in the department and he has no intimation that teachers are not there. The VC office received the file on August 1 and signed the file on next day.

While the Dean University Instructions (DUI) also termed the matter as a very serious issue, and he promised to take the matter on priority basis. Adding to that he said that he was unaware of the classes not being held at the department of law. On last Tuesday, members of Indian National Students Organization (INSO), Panjab University, staged a protest outside the Law department while raising the issue that the third and fifth-semester classes are not being held.

A spokesperson of INSO said they were given verbal assurance by the chairman that the classes would be resumed soon.

Several students said that the classes started from 18th July but the teachers were not present. If the teachers were not present, why did they start the classes so early? Again the results are yet to be declared. It caused a lot of inconvenience to students.
