Implementation of 16% quota for Socially and Economically Backwards Classes (SEBC) and 10% quota for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in government and private medical colleges in Maharashtra will result in fewer PG seats for open category students. Maharashtra youth is alleging ‘reverse discrimination’ against the government after the seat reduction was announced.

Currently, the number of seats in the medical colleges in Maharashtra is significantly less in number to provide a full reservation to the SEBC and EWS. In this case, implementing 8% reservation for SEBC and 5% for EWS will result in only 20% and 5% of vacant seats for open category candidates in UG and PG medical seats respectively.

To protest against the revised reservation quota, more than 40 parents and hundreds of students called for a press conference in the city. One parent of an aspirant informed that if the new quota is implemented, there will be no seats in the skin branch, 1 seat in orthopedic and radiology, three seats in surgery, two seats in pediatric and four seats in the medical branch will be free for open category students. The protesting aspirants and their parents have said that they have moved to the high court for a stay order on the implementation of the quota. The parents are expecting the court to grant their plea. They have also requested the government to not stick with the 50% reservation for open quota in education and jobs.
