The Masters in Tamil language Department of Dravidian University has 20 intake capacity for M.A. Tamil course for higher studies in the Language. The shocking revelation has come from the University that not a single application has been received in the course in the academic session of 2019-20. The University was set up in 1997 at the Kuppam, Andhra Pradesh with the help of 4 southern states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh for promoting the Dravidian languages and Culture.

The Post Graduate (PG) Departments of the university offers PG course in Masters, M.Phill and Ph.D degrees in the university. The PG studies in the university are sponsored by the mentioned states. The Tamil Department was set up in Dravidian University started functioning in 2005 with 4 faculties including the HOD.

Mr Vishnukumaran, the head in-charge has informed that the students who come to study at the university get their academic and lodging fees from the state government. He added that the PhD section has 6 full time and 7 part-time students and the M.Phill section has only 1 part-time student.

A total amount of 10.25 crores have been spent over the course of time in Ph.D in Tamil Language but it seems like the students are gradually losing interest in the courses.

The assistant professor of language studies, Mr Mariappan revealed that in the last year, there were 6 students and in 2017, there were 9, but in the current year, no applications in MA course have come to cause a shock for all the faculties in the University.

Mr. Vishnukumaran has informed that many students from the college are placed and working as translators in many agencies. Some of the students got admissions in Central University as well. There are presidential award winners also in the alumni list.

For the sake of admission, the Thiruvarur Central University has conducted the 2nd round of entrance test. The state representative expectedly could recommend a similar step by the Dravidian University. The minister of Tamil Language, Mr K. Pandiarajan has spoken that he would look into it.
