Education Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Uday Samant announced that the final-year students of universities and colleges will have to appear for the exams. On the other hand, other students will be promoted without exams. 50:50 formula will be applied to promote students where 50% weightage will be given to the marks scored in the previous academic year and 50% weightage for academic performance in the current year.

The exams for final year students will begin from July 01, 2020, to July 30, 2020.

If any student fails to clear the gradation or promotion system (not applicable for the final year), he/ she will still be promoted to the next year. However, these students will have to appear for exams, which will be conducted within 120 days after the commencement of the academic session.

Maharashtra: No Mass Promotion of Final-Year Students without Exams

Responding to the rumours that are circulating on various platforms, Higher Education Minister of Maharashtra, Mr. Uday Samant revealed that the college students in the state would not be promoted without conducting the exams. The Minister explained that the college exams are expected to be conducted in the next 2 months, and it is not possible to hold the same in May. As the lockdown is extended till May 17, 2020, the new exam dates may be released only after this date. The students will not be promoted on the basis of average marks, and it is important to promote students only by conducting exams, he added.

If the lockdown is lifted partially, exams will be conducted in those districts where the lockdown is lifted. For other districts, the universities will come up with Plan B. As of now, there is no certainty on the revised dates for the college exams, and everything can be confirmed only after May 03, 2020, he added.

Responding to the completion of syllabus for degree courses, the Minister said that the syllabus has been completed in 75% of universities and colleges across the state. For the rest, online classes are being conducted to complete the same, he explained.

The colleges and universities in Maharashtra will be re-opened after April 14. Most of them have been serving as quarantine facility as of now.
