Maharashtra: State Govt. Likely to Take Over Admissions of Medical & Dental Colleges
For the academic session 2017-18, High Court of Bombay will take the decision regarding the admission to private and deemed medical institutes.
The state government of Maharashtra has plans to take over the admission and counselling process for deemed and private dental and medical institutes. The government has been waiting to implement the plan for the past two years. DMER or Directorate of Medical Education and Research will soon issue a notice regarding the same.
On March 11, 2017, Medical Council of India (MCI) had instructed all the states to hold admission to all dental and medical colleges. The order that was given by MCI has strengthened the state’s claim over the admission process. Pravin Shingare, Director of DMER indicated that they will go ahead with the order of MCI and a notification will be issued soon.

During the academic session 2016-17, Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) had issued a notice that it would hold admissions to deemed and private institutes.
Later, private medical colleges in High Court challenged the decision of DMER. The High Court favoured the petition filed by private medical institutes. However, DMER approached Supreme Court and won the case in September 2016. Most of the medical seats had been filled by that time and admissions to 350 medical seats were conducted by the state.

For the academic session 2017-18, High Court of Bombay will take the decision regarding the admission to private and deemed medical institutes. However, the High Court may finalise the decision favouring DMER as MCI issued an order to all the states to hold admissions and counselling for medical and dental courses.
