MHT-CET B.Tech 2017: Engineering Aspirants to Race for Fewer Seats this Year

The engineering aspirants from Maharashtra will have fewer seats to opt in 2017-18. According to the data of Directorate of Technical Education, Maharashtra (DTE, Maharashtra), the number of engineering seats have dropped from 1.43 lakh to 1.30 lakh. Compared to the previous year, the students will have 13,000 fewer seats this year.

Joint Director of DTE revealed that some of the colleges did not update the number of seats. The deadline for the colleges to update the data was May 8, 2017. He further mentioned that the number of seats might increase by a few hundreds before the counselling commences.

DTE, Maharashtra conducted entrance examination or pharmacy and engineering courses on May 11, 2017. DTE will release the results soon and start the counselling process.

Experts were of the opinion that the engineering intake of various colleges in the state has been shrinking every year. On the other hand, the number of engineering seats being vacant after the counselling has been increasing every year. Most of the students who qualify in the entrance examination are not turning up to take admission to engineering. Most of the engineering aspirants are looking for alternative career options.

For instance, in the year 2016, around 2.63 lakh students appeared and qualified in the entrance examination. After the counselling and seat allotment process, a total number of 64,408 seats remained vacant. Last year, the total number of engineering seats was 1.43 lakh.

Some of the technical institutes across the state got fewer admissions last year. With fewer admissions, it is difficult for the technical institutes to sustain in the long run.
