MP Board Announced Changes in Method of Marking in Board Exams: In a major shift, the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) has announced changes in the method of awarding marks in its board examinations. According to official sources and reports, while the total marks for practical exams will remain unchanged, the internal allocation between the practical record/experiments (lab manual) and the oral/verbal component will now be separated and awarded independently.

As per the revised scheme, for Class 12 science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, the marks for the lab record/annual practical notebook and oral exam will no longer be combined. Earlier, both components were merged into a single aggregate score; now, they will have distinct scores. For example, in Chemistry, the record book (practical notebook) will carry 4 marks, and the oral examination will carry 2 marks separately.

Teachers and subject experts say this change aims to reduce pressure on students during the verbal/oral part. Many students fear that a weak performance in oral rounds could drag down their overall practical score. With the new scheme, a student’s notebook performance will not be penalised by shortcomings in the oral. The Board is expected to issue detailed blueprints for all subjects soon, showing how many marks each portion will carry.

School principals and science teachers have welcomed the change, believing it will ease student anxiety and bring more transparency in evaluation.  While the total marks for practical exams remain unchanged and only the internal distribution has been tweaked, students now eagerly await the release of official blueprints for each subject. These blueprints are expected to specify the weightage of questions from different chapters, thus guiding students on effective preparation.
