After making National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) mandatory for the admission to medical and dental courses, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare also implemented common counselling at the state level for the admission to medical and dental courses.

Therefore, various amendments were made in the relevant regulations of MCI or Medical Council of India to empower states and union territories to counselling for all the medical institutes across the state and institutes that are established by the central government, deemed universities and private universities.

However, Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will conduct the counselling for All India Quota at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.

The decision taken by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare received a positive response from students and parents. Experts have been of the opinion that the move would ensure transparency in the admission process and regulate the practice of capitation fee charged by various medical colleges.

Dr. K.K. Agarwal of Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressed that students need not apply to multiple colleges in the same state to seek admission. On the other, the government introduced NEET at the all-India level and without holding common counselling there is no point of making single level entrance exam mandatory for the admission to medical courses.

Executive Director of National Board of Examinations, Mr. Bipin Chandra revealed that common counselling for the admission to UG and PG medical and dental courses is a positive move taken by the centre as it implemented NEET as a mandatory test for the admission to these courses. Through this initiative, every medical seat in the country will be utilised effectively and no college will be allowed to charge an additional fee other than the prescribed fee structure.

Students and doctors also welcomed the move taken by the government. They said that common counselling would end malpractices during the admission process. However, the government is yet to give more clarity on NEET Super Specialty (SS) common counselling.
