NEET PG 2021 mop up round has been cancelled by the Supreme Court. There had been several anomalies in the conduction of the NEET PG 2021 AIQ mop up round. The primary discrepancy in the mop up round was that the additional 146 seats had not been there in the first and second round of counselling. This was considered to be unfair by several aspiring candidates who had applied for counselling in Round 1 and Round 2 respectively.

The other matter that was brought up by the aspiring candidates was that according to the rules of NEET PG counselling, aspiring candidates who have accepted seats in premier medical institutions of the country via State Quota are not allowed to apply in the AIQ mop up round. This has not been the case for several candidates as they have been allowed to apply for AIQ counselling even after locking a State Quota seat.

The Supreme Court bench that had been debating the issue over the past couple of days, headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud stated on Thursday, March 31, 2022– “The All-India Quota mop-up round of counselling shall stand cancelled. For the 146 additional seats which became available after AIQ round 2 on 16 March 2022, a fresh round of counselling shall be conducted as a special case”.

The bench, also comprising of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Surya Kant, further stated that all candidates who had joined premier medical institutions via the second round of NEET PG 2021 in either the State Quota or the AIQ are not eligible to join the new mop up round that will be held for the seat filling in the All India Quota.

Meanwhile, the DGHS had proposed to the Supreme Court that they are willing to drop the 146 fresh seats in the government medical colleges that had been opened up for the mop up round. However, the Justice bench headed by D Y Chandrachud was clear when he stated that in this Catch-22 situation, it would be inadvisable on the part of the Supreme Court to take away the admissions of those who had joined in any of the 146 seats. Education is more important, the bench has declared.
