After announcing that the JEE Advanced will be conducted in online mode from 2018, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) announced that multiple choice questions (MCQ) will be scrapped from the IIT entrance exam.

The board has announced that short answer type questions will be introduced in the exam. Since the exam will now be conducted in online mode, it will enable the students to type their answers. Short questions will be asked in the exams and the students will have to key in the correct answers.

Till now, the JEE Advanced exam has been conducted by one of the IITs in pen paper mode and all the questions asked in the exam are MCQs. Students had to mark the correct answer option in the OMR sheet provided with the question paper. These sheets are evaluated by machines.

An official of JAB informed that conducting the JEE Advanced exam in online mode will open up the possibilities of typing accurate answers on the basis of calculations.

The official also said that MCQs do not enable the examiners to analyse the knowledge of the student as the elimination of answer options is possible to mark the correct answer. With short answer type questions the elimination of answer choices will not be possible, the official added.

Also, this will give the exam setters the liberty to come up with a variety of questions since they do not have to follow the MCQ format. These questions will test the knowledge and technique of students instead of memorization method to crack the questions.

More concept based questions will be asked in the JEE Advanced exam. The official also added that the exam pattern is likely to change.

The online exam pattern will also enable the examiners to eliminate typing errors and translation errors. This will also simplify the evaluation process and will eradicate the need to award grace marks.
