Health MinisterMr. JP Naddain the question hour atRajya Sabhamentioned that the policy norms to set up medical colleges and an increase in the number of seats is required to minimize the shortage of doctors across the country. He said that if the number of medical seats in government medical colleges increases the shortage of doctors can be minimized. The shortage of doctors cannot be fulfilled overnight and it needs the changes in the policy.

He mentioned that the space requirement to start the medical colleges has reduced and the government norms are being looked out so that various hospitals in towns can start a medical college. On the other hand, the specifications for the staff requirement in the medical college is also being eased out. Regulations in these regards are coming soon.
He also asserted that the government is planning to increase Post Graduate seats on par with MBBS seats. Congress member, Vinod Thakur has raised a point regarding the super-speciality doctors in a medical college and their appointment. In reply, Mr. Nadda said that the appointment of super-speciality doctors in a particular medical college is the responsibility of government.
