Odisha Govt. Provides Land to IIT Bhubaneshwar for Coastal Observatory
The institute has been asked to set up the observatory as Odisha is very vulnerable to natural calamities.
On Friday i.e. 12thAugust’ 16, the state government of Bhubaneshwar proposed to set up a coastal observatory in front of the state cabinet. The proposal was approved and the meeting was administered by Naveen Patnaik, CM of Bhubaneswar.Indian Institute of Technology of Bhubaneswarhas been requested to set up the observatory for which the state government is going to provide the land. The land is of 40 acres in Ganjam district and the land is provided completely free of cost.
The institute has been asked to set up the observatory as Odisha is very vulnerable to natural calamities. The institute will observe the climate change and work on ways how to save the environment. The observatory will observe the following and will come up with solutions:
- Network of meteorological
- Network of oceanographic
- Network of geophysical instruments

Following are the calamities Odisha is prone to:
- Flood
- Forecast
- Sudden change in weather
- Earthquake
- Tsunami
- Erosion
The observatory is expected to work on following:
- Fisheries Management
- Aquaculture
- Marine Biotechnology

So basically the coastal observatory will monitor, predict and provide solutions for any natural disaster.
