Only 40 Percent Engineering Graduates Grab Placements: HRD Minister in Rajya Sabha

While addressing the Question Hour in the Rajya Sabha today (30th March), Prakash Javadekar, HRD minister revealed that according to statistics and reports, only 40 percent of the engineering graduates are able to grab placement opportunities after they pass out from their college.

In order to deal with this situation, the All India Council for Technical Education or AICTE, the prime regulator of engineering education in the country, has decided to introduce the concept of summer internships for a minimum of 75 percent students. Additionally, it will also work towards ensuring an updated model of the engineering curriculum.

While discussing the quality of education with respect to engineering, Prakash Javadekar added that his team has a set a target of ensuring that at least 60% engineering graduates in India are deemed employable in the next five years.

AICTE Data/Report Snapshot:

  • Only 40 percent engineering graduates are employed after completing their graduation studies at present.
  • The summer internship programme which the body is planning to launch will be focussed on making engineering grads industry ready.
  • It will update the model curriculum on its official website and will keep updating it every now and then.

He also emphasised on the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) courses that impart teacher training, highlighting that the ministry has received a large pool of complaints with respect to the education quality. Basis the same, the ministry has directed the colleges to submit legal affidavits that mention the number of teachers, their details, salary structure as well as infrastructural conditions.

At present, there are about 6,300 colleges whose feedbacks are being analysed. On the other hand, those who have not provided the feedback or have failed to produce mandatory details will be sent legal notices by the Human Resource Development Ministry.
