Only 46% Seats were Filled in Private Engineering Colleges in 2016-17
- The official data revealed that there were 16.07 lakh engineering seats in various colleges across the country out of which 8.67 lakh seats remained vacant last year.
- In the year 2016-17, only 28% seats remained vacant in government engineering colleges.
According to an official statistics that were presented in Lok Sabha, around 54% of engineering seats in private engineering colleges remained vacant during the academic session 2016-17. The official data revealed that there were 16.07 lakh engineering seats in various colleges across the country out of which 8.67 lakh seats remained vacant last year. However, the current academic session witnessed a reduction in the number of engineering seats in private colleges by approximately 96,000. On the other hand, the number of colleges that took part in the counselling or admission process was reduced by 83 as compared to the previous year. Earlier, Chairperson of AICTE revealed that 275 engineering colleges decided to shut down and applied for closure.

In the year 2016-17, only 28% seats remained vacant in government engineering colleges. In the current academic session, the number of government engineering colleges has been increased from 411 to 429.

Tamil Nadu topped the list with more than one lakh seats vacant in private engineering colleges. The same tendency has been continuing for the past three to four years. Few private engineering colleges in various states are not in a position to enroll enough number of students.
