Osmania University Detains 1,500 Engineering Students

  • Osmania University students who had more than 12 subject backlogs and insufficient credit score have been detained.
  • Following it, more than 100 students staged a protest demanding advanced supplementary exams and relaxation of rules.

Around 1,500 students who are pursuing various engineering courses in colleges affiliated to Osmania University have been detained as they failed to clear the required number of subjects and score enough credits in semester examinations.

Earlier, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad also detained 10,000 first year engineering students for not scoring a minimum of 24 credits out of the 48 credits based on the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). A similar policy has been followed by OU in this regard.

An official associated with the engineering wing of Osmania University revealed that after careful observation in the evaluation process it was found that about 900 students did not write their responses and instead filled the answer scripts with questions! Apart from that, around 200 students scored single digit marks in the semester examinations, he added.

Those candidates who have more than 12 backlogs have been detained by the varsity thus adhering to the CBCS rules that restrict students with more than eight backlogs. The varsity even applied leniency by taking into account 12-subject backlog system instead of eight.

On August 30, 2017, a total of 100 students from affiliated colleges of Osmania University staged a protest at the administrative building of the varsity demanding the authorities to conduct advanced supplementary examinations and relax the rules of detention. No final decision has been taken in this regard.

In 2016, all the universities across the state implemented CBCS for various courses offered by them. Telangana State Council for Higher Education (TSCHE) instructed all the universities to follow CBCS strictly.
