Panjab University Rolls Back Fee Hike, Sticks to 10 Percent Increase
- PU has rolled back its decision to hike fee from 40% to 10%.
- This will be applicable to new admissions from this year.
- Existing students will witness only 5% hike.
The Panjab University (PU) has rolled back its decision to hike the fee from 40 percent to 10 percent. The Senate on Sunday, 7th May, decided that the hike in fee for the academic year 2017-18 would be 10 percent across all the courses. On hearing this, student's organisation started celebrating their victory on the campus.
Arun Kumar Grover, the Vice-Chancellor of PU told that they will have to give an explanation to the MHRD, UGC and Punjab government regarding the decrement in fee hike. He added that the MRHD will freeze the grant of Rs 198 crore with this decision.

Last year Panjab University increased its fee by 5 percent while an estimated 12.5 percent fee hike was approved by the senate for all the courses offered in the varsity from the academic year 2017-18.
The senate had declared the minimum hike of Rs. 500 if the annual fee is not more than Rs 5,000. The 10 percent rise in fee would be applicable to students taking admission in this year. However, for the existing students, the rise in fee will be 5 percent only i.e minimum increment of Rs. 500 and maximum of Rs. 1,200.

Although PU had witnessed a fee hike but numerous fee concession schemes are being approved by the university. These schemes will be applied to all courses except the self-financed courses. One such scheme is for the students who have qualified their 12th std from a government-aided school or a government school and their family income is less than 5 lakh (annually) will be given a 50 percent concession in the tuition fee.
