The PSEB or Punjab School Education Board will conduct board exams for not only class 10 and 12 levels, but also for class 5 and 8. From the next academic year of 2019-20. The Class 5 and 8 level board exams were previously taken by State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) from which, PSEB is going to take the charge over.

With the announcement that came from the board regarding the change, model/sample question papers were also released for the better understanding of the question patters under PSEB. The board released the circular on their official website. The exam pattern is also expected to undergo some changes but the syllabus will remain the same as before.

Raminderjeet Singh, the PSEB spokesperson informed that the schools earlier used to set up indigenous question papers. PSEB board examination will help to create a uniform level examination. The board has uploaded model question papers so that the teachers of the schools are aware of the exam pattern and the questions that are likely to come in the next board examination and get to teach the students accordingly.

The decision came after the SCERT came under the heap of accusations for causing chaos in the previous examinations. This year itself, the Punjabi Class 8 level question paper was leaked. In 6 exam centres around the state, the Punjabi question paper was distributed in the Social Studies examination.

Though the SCERT tried to ignore the gravity of the situation by saying the incident to be a small goof up, they were barred to conduct the examinations for class 5 and 8 onwards. The PSEB spokesperson, however, said that the decision came as the new RTE (Right to Education) was passed under which, in the no-detention policy, no student of class 8 can be declared failed. Thus, the PSEB will work to implement uniformity among the state board schools.

He added that these sort of board examinations were taken in the ’90s also which was scrapped afterwards.
