Despite the government claims of improvement in engineering education in Rajasthan, it has been revealed that only 16 Engineering Colleges in Rajasthan from the total number of 139 could only make it to the top quality list. The data has been released by the Quality Analysis of Technical Education report of 2018-19.

The analysis for listing the technical colleges in various categories is on the basis of various parameters. These parameters are indicated in the Quality Index Value- QIV. The colleges are primarily divided into three main categories- A, B, and C.

As an answer to a question in the Rajasthan State Assembly, a minister presented the reports in the assembly where it is shown that only 16 institutes have done fair performance under the QIV. Out of the total 139 colleges, 11 are Government colleges and 126 are private institutions. Remaining 2 are constituent colleges of two universities in Rajasthan.

The ‘A’ list, which is the topmost category have featured the names of 12 colleges under RTU (Rajasthan Technical University) and 4 from BTU (Bikaner Technical University). Surprisingly, not a single government college could make it to the A list of QIV. Among the 16 colleges, 10 are from Jaipur, 3 from Alwar, 2 from Udaipur and 1 institute from Jodhpur.

These categories are mainly taken into consideration by students who are looking forward to quality technical education. Apart from the engineering institutes, the A category has been acquired by 2 management colleges in Rajasthan which are affiliated to BTU. However, no Management Institute under RTU featured in the list of A Category.

Among the other ‘A’ category colleges, there are 2 RTU and 1 BTU institutes for MCA (Masters in Computer Application) course in Rajasthan. Only one Architecture college in Rajasthan has made it to the A list which is affiliated to RTU.

Experts suggest, that less focus on outcome-based education is the reason for fewer colleges making it to A category list. According to the experts, there is no limit as to how many technical colleges can operate in a state. This is the prime reason that such institutes are mushrooming with no guarantee of quality education.

Quality Index Value- QIV is regarded as one of the best parameters to judge the colleges in the state which has the highest scores with the NBA. NBA has its focus more on outcome-based education rather than just focusing on facility-based education. It is because of this many engineering streams of many colleges fail to get NBA certificate.

Still, it is clear that despite a lot of policies and reformation activities, the Rajasthan Engineering Colleges are losing quality in competition to quantity.
