Reports Reveal Rising Demand of Vocational Courses in Maharashtra

There is a 7.5 percent increase in the demand of the vocational courses in Maharashtra and more than 1.17 lakh students were admitted to Industrial Training Institutes (ITI), as per the report brought out by a human resource consultant.
Human Resource Consultant, TeamLease, revealed that around 92 per cent seats in government-run ITIs have been filled compared to private ITIs that saw fewer takers of 77.4 per cent seats.

The report said that there has been a rise in demand for skilled labour force in the country. Formally only 2 percent of the labour force is trained and 8 percent acquire skills on the job.
The report also mentions 'Low-status’ stigma attached to the vocational course for the low enrollment of the students. Students with degrees are preferred by industries over those with ITI certificates.

Rituparna Chakraborty, Executive Vice-President of TeamLease said that students joining ITIs don’t know the benefits of a vocational course in their professions, especially when it is compared to mainstream degrees such as engineering. Most of the ITIs have their outdated and archaic curriculum.
She also said that there is a need to overhaul the entire syllabus at ITIs. A student from ITI said that ITI certificate holders are technically knowledgeable than their engineering counterparts due to the practical training. ITI certificate courses are a way out for those students who want to earn a living even while studying.
