Know What This Chemical Engineering Scholar at IIT Hyderabad Invent

The research team of Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has found a way to keep up with menstrual hygiene which is important because of the complications it may otherwise lead to. A Professor of Chemical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad, Professor Chandra Shekhar Sharma and his team has invented nanofibre sanitary napkins to make the monthly experience of females a little more sanitary. The product that the IIT-H team has made does not consist of Super Absorbent Polymers (SAP) in it which makes it a better option than commercial sanitary napkins.

The team has used the electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) nanofibers as the core material for absorption that results in the napkins being less harmful. On the other hand, the non-biodegradable super absorbent polymers compromise on the health of the females as they are synthetic in nature.

The Professor told the reporters that the side effects of the commercial sanitary napkins include ovarian cancer and toxic shock syndrome, but the use of nanofibre-based sanitary napkins reduces the possibility of these after effects. He also said that the aim of this project was to make a product which will actually help the females and will reduce the use of SAPs as they are non-biodegradable and not eco-friendly.
