Schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur set to Reopen on December 5 after 4-day Rain Holidays
Schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur will reopen on December 5 after a four-day break caused by heavy rain and flooding from Cyclone Ditwah. With the rains almost gone, authorities have kept today as a precautionary holiday for both districts.
Schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur are set to reopen on December 5, 2025 , following a four-day break caused by the heavy rainfall brought by Cyclone Ditwah. District authorities had ordered the closure of all government, aided, and private schools on December 4, as continuous downpours resulted in waterlogging across several areas. Fortunately, weather conditions in Chennai have begun to improve. The thick clouds that dominated earlier in the week are slowly clearing, though occasional drizzles and puddles remain in some neighbourhoods. Today’s holiday has been declared mainly as a precaution, as officials continue to track the IMD’s latest weather updates to ensure student safety.
In recent days, Chennai and its neighbouring districts witnessed widespread rainfall, leading to major disruptions. Orange alerts were issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kancheepuram as the cyclone’s remnants continued to affect the northern part of Tamil Nadu. Over 80 mm of rain fell within 48 hours, causing severe traffic issues and prompting rescue teams to evacuate people from low-lying regions. The India Meteorological Department has stated that while the intensity has reduced, light to moderate rain with isolated thunderstorms is still possible. Inland districts such as Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri may receive slightly heavier spells. While the holiday paused classroom learning, it protected children from travelling through flooded roads and prevented them from studying in unsafe school environments.
Academically, the unexpected break has caused minor delays in the syllabus. However, teachers agree that safety must come before schedule. Schools may adjust exam dates or extend the academic calendar slightly if needed. Many institutions are already planning catch-up classes and considering brief online activities so that students can revise the lessons they missed. Educators believe that such small changes are manageable compared to the risk posed by extreme weather conditions.
As the state prepares for the coming days, forecasts indicate mostly light rainfall across Tamil Nadu, with chances of heavier showers in districts like Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Ramanathapuram. Parents, teachers, and students are encouraged to stay alert to sudden weather changes. The short break has provided time to rest and recover, ensuring that when schools reopen on December 5, learning can continue smoothly and safely for the rest of the academic year.
