Shashi Tharoor Highlights Multi-Pronged Reforms Needed in Higher Education

While addressing the audience during a public lecture in theUniversity of Kerala, Author and Parliamentarian Dr. Shashi Tharoor talked about themulti-pronged reforms in higher education. As per him, such reforms will savehigher educationfrom its isolation with innovation, excellence and industries.
During his public lecture, he talked about how ourhigher educationis miles away from world-class universities as it lacks a proper system for enrolment, innovation and employability. He also argued about opening doors to foreign universities to establish their campuses in Kerala.

According to him, the politicization of university is one of the holes in thehigher education systemin Kerala. Due to the specific case of quality assurance council in the University of Kerala, it has led to shutting doors for teachers who did not belong to pro-government teacher organizations. This has affected the quality of higher education in the state and is barring the educational excellence.

He cited the examples of some of the renowned research institutions in Thiruvananthapuram such asNIIST,IISET,IIST, andCDAC. In his view, these institutions can help in building a research eco-system and starting various new research projects.
