Special Committee Formed to Increase Number of Female Candidates in Top IITs
JAB forms committee to increase the enrollment of females in IITs.
For the past so many years, it has been recorded that the number of males recruited in the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have been more than the number of girls enrolled for the same, making the IITs male dominated. However, the Joint Admission Board has decided to change this scenario and bridge the gender gap in IITs. A panel has been formed for the same that will suggest ways to increase the enrollment of females in IITs.

The same issue came into light on August 21, 2016 in a board meeting which is also responsible for conducting JEE exam for IIT admissions.
A subcommittee was formed lead by Professor Timothy Gonsalves, to resolve the issue of male dominance in IITs and boost the participation of girl students in IITs.
According to stats, it was found out that on comparing the records with last year, this year saw a 2% fall in the number of female candidates clearing JEE Advanced exam. It was recorded that last year more than about 10 percent of the total 10,000 seats i.e more than 1000 girl students cracked the exam. Though, the final number of female students taking admission in the IITs was only 840.

One of the reasons behind this diversity is the fact that coaching centers are not easy to reach and many parents don't consider them safe. According to stats, it was clear that most of the toppers of JEE Advance belonged to some top ranking coaching institutes from Kota and other places.
This has been estimated as one of the reasons behind the performance of girl candidates in JEE Advanced exam. Also, no girl candidate could make it to the top 100 with the topper among female students, Riya Singh, got an all India rank of 133.
