HRD Ministry is all set to propose a new research scholar scheme in the IIT council meeting next week. According to this scheme, 1000 brilliant students studying B Tech from top IIT’s will be identified and will be given a chance to pursue their PhD directly after completing their BTech.
In the next meeting, the proposal for the same will be presented in front of the IIT’s to know if it possible for exceptionally brilliant students to start with their PhD immediately after BTech.
BTech pass outs from IIT’s will also be given a chance to do so.
The main aim behind this step is to resolve the issue of shortage of faculty in the top IIT’s. According to stats, it has been recorded that despite of 2000 students applying for PhD every year, about 2000 faculty positions are still vacant. The selection criteria for a faculty member at any top IIT is very hard, keeping this in mind, the quality of PhD provided to the students should be improved and bright IIT students should be urged to undertake research.
In order to urge more and more IITians to pursue PhD after BTech, the government is also ready to offer hefty scholarships to students. This will be an attempt to compensate with the salary a IIT student gets after B Tech in the corporate sector.
According to the Anil Kakodkar Committee report on IITs, it was estimated that currently each IIT has around 500 faculties which needs to be increased to 1,200 faculty and a higher number of PhD students, closer to 12,000 total students.
