The management and authorities at Binod Bihari Mahto Koylanchal University (BBMKU) recently hiked their B.Ed fees from Rs.90,000 to Rs.1,50,000 four months ago. The decision, however, had not been well received by the students and the student bodies of the University. They have been fighting with the management to reduce the fees but to no avail.

The students with the respective student bodies have been trying to convince the management to go back to the previous fee structure. However, BBMKU management has declined any requests to reduce the fees. A meeting in this respect had been held between the student bodies and the varsity management, however, the meeting adjourned with no mutual solution.

Among the other competitors, the fees for the two-year B.Ed course varies from Rs.85,000 to Rs.1,50,000, with the lowest fees at Sido Kanhu Murmu University and the highest B.Ed fees at Ranchi University.

The Vice-Chancellor of BBMKU, Anjani Srivastava, stated that he will be studying the requests made by the students with regard to the reduction of the fees. He added that all the universities, such as Sido Kanhu Murmu University, Kolhan University, Nilamber Pitamber University and Ranchi University excluding VBU Hazaribagh have hiked their fees from Rs.90,000 to Rs.1,50,000. This compelled the varsity to also adopt the hike in their B.Ed fees structure.

The VC Of BBMKU also added that the requests for the reduction in the B.Ed fees have come about four months after the current academic session commenced. The proposal to reduce the fees at this point becomes a major obstacle for the management to reduce the fees. He added that the situation could have been avoided if the students had raised the issue in the beginning.

Samrat Kumar, a representative of the B.Ed students expressed that BBMKU should have adhered to the fees structure of VBU Hazaribagh. He stated that BBMKU “was carved out VBU Hazaribagh” and since they have retained the previous B.Ed fees structure of ₹90,000, BBMKU should have also followed their steps.

Student leaders claimed that at the time of counselling, students were not informed about the hike in the fees of the course. However, soon after the admission of the students, a hike of Rs.60,000 was announced.

An official source has announced that the Vice-Chancellor was ready to reduce the hiked fees of the B.Ed course by Rs.20,000, however, the student leaders were adamant on reducing the fees by a minimum of Rs.30,000 and nothing less.
