The Madras High Court has said to the competent authority to take a quick decision on making Tamil as a mandatory subject in their institutions.
According to a report in Press Trust of India (PTI), the first bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana has said, "It is appropriate to appoint a retired High Court Judge to take a quick decision as examinations are due in March 2016."
The matter relates to a June 3, 2014 order of the Director of School Education Department to implement Tamil Nadu Tamil Learning Act 2006, under which Tamil was made compulsory as Part I from standard 1 to 9 in a phased manner.Challenging this, several summons were filed contending that the parents should take the decision to choose the medium of instruction on behalf of their children. On the other side, the school education department, in counter, submitted that the Act was upheld by the High Court and the Supreme Court.
