Delhi University is gearing up for admissions to undergraduate students for the next academic session. However the university, from this year onwards, is pondering over making the entire process online.
A 24-member committee that comprises of deans from faculty of science, commerce and arts, nine college principals and members of the executive and academic councils has been constituted by the university to formulate an admission policy that will be notified by the next month.
According to a committee member, “The committee members have recommended that the admission process should go entirely online. Last year, the varsity had attempted the same but offline admissions also continued as there were concerns from parents and students about the feasibility of the process.”
He further added, “However, even UGC has given the go-ahead for the same and the process has been already tested so the admissions are likely to be completely online from this year,”
Last fortnight saw the admission committee headed by the Dean of Students Welfare conducting two meetings. There are other recommendations being made such as having a centralized system of fee collection and reduction in the number of cut-off lists.
An official said, “So far, with the offline admission system being in place, the application centres used to collect the fees. However, we are thinking of making it centralised this time. All the payments will be made by the candidates to the university which in turn will reimburse the respective colleges.” He added, “Also, with seven to eight cut-off lists being announced every year, the process drags to the month of August, by when the classes have already begun. So the number of cut-offs are likely to be limited to five from this year onwards.”
The final recommendations would be send by the panel to the vice-chancellor who would take the final decision.
The admissions to the university begins in May. Approximately 54,000 undergraduate students are admitted to the university in various courses across over 60 colleges.
