List of Distance Education Courses Approved by UGC in Universities
Many universities have been given heads up to run the distance education courses as per the UGC Open and Distance Learning Regulations. As many as 651 distance education programmes have been approved by the UGC.
The UGC has granted approval to some of the state universities to offer distance learning courses from the academic session 2018-19. Several universities in the state have applied for the approval of distance learning courses.

For the academic session 2018-19, two popular universities in Tamil Nadu, i.e., Anna University and Madras University will only offer four courses in distance mode. The University Grants Commission has cancelled affiliation to 95% distance courses offered by both universities. The new UGC rule with regard to distance learning courses is the major reasons for such a move.
Madras University offers 97 courses in UG and PG level. Out of 97 courses, UGC has granted approval to only three courses namely B.A. Public Administration, M.A. Public Administration and M.A. Political Science for the academic session 2018-19. On the other hand, UGC recognised only one course offered Anna University, i.e., M.Sc Computer Science out of 10 courses offered in distance mode.
As per the new UGC rules, universities featured in Category I and Category II of graded autonomy are allowed to offer various courses in distance mode.

Even though Madras University is eligible to offer distance courses, non-maintenance of minimum faculty per course forced UGC to derecognise 95% distance courses offered by the varsity. At present, 20,000 students are pursuing different courses through the Institute of Distance Learning – Madras University. It is mandatory for the varsity to maintain at least two faculty members per course. However, the varsity failed to meet the minimum requirement.
Kerala University, Kannur University and Calicut University in Kerala have also been granted approval to run distance education courses by Distance Education Bureau (DEB) - UGC.
From Andhra Pradesh, Acharya Nagarjuna University and Sri Padmavati Mahila Vishvavidyalayam received approval.
UGC will grant approval to distance learning courses only to the universities that satisfy the minimum requirements and submit an application for the approval of distance courses.
