The number of ragging cases have been reduced in Madhya Pradesh as per the data received from the anti-ragging helpline of the University Grants Commission (UGC), the last three years have witnessed a sharp dip in the ragging cases. The data shows that 2013 recorded 80 cases, and 2014 had 74 cases filed. Further, in 2015, the number of cases came down to 48 only.

In spite of the shrinking number, Bhopal was still second in India as per the number of complaints filed against ragging in 2015. On the other hand, the states of West Bengal (53) and Uttar Pradesh (53) recorded the maximum number of complaints against ragging. All over India, there were as much as 427 cases filed against ragging.

The Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi Proudhyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV), Prof Piyush Trivedi, said that awareness among educational institutions and students played a vital role in the diminishing count of ragging cases. "It is good to see there is a decline in the number of cases. However, we need to keep our campuses totally free of ragging and colleges and universities should strive on achieving it. Students should also understand that ragging is a serious crime and they should not indulge in any kind of ragging. It can spoil their career," he added.

The official website of the UGC shows the data since the year 2009. Records show that 347 cases (which included 26 girls’ filed there. There are states like West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh which showed top figures of 412 and 601 respectively against the crime. It was in the year 2013 that the maximum number of cases were filed; while the lowest number recorded in 2015. Coming to the present scenario, there have been three cases of ragging already filed in 2016. The first case was in MANIT in Bhopal.
