Union Cabinet Approves Proposal to Set Up 20 AIIMS across India
- Under PMSYY, the government will set up 20 AIIMS and upgrade 73 medical colleges.
- The construction of AIIMS institutes across the country will be funded by the central government.
Earlier this week, the Union Cabinet has given its nod for setting up 20 All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) across the country. The cabinet headed by Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi also approved upgradation of 73 medical colleges across the country.
These significant decisions are a part of PMSSY (Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana). Now, the scheme has been extended by two years until 2020 with a financial outlay of Rs. 14,832 crore.

The decision to extend PMSYY until 2020 was taken to meet the shortage of healthcare professionals and facilities in the country. Establishing new AIIMS institutes will not only boost the healthcare sector but also it will generate employment opportunities for over 3,000 people in various faculty and non-faculty positions.
The construction of AIIMS institutes across the country will be funded by the central government. Similarly, the central government will also bear the maintenance and operations expenses of these facilities.

The upgradation of 73 medical colleges across the country involves improving health infrastructure by constructing trauma centres, super speciality blocks and others. The improvement of facilities will enable quality healthcare as well as quality education. The procurement of medical equipment for upgrading these medical colleges and the expenses associated with it will be shared by both central and state governments.
The government is trying to mitigate the shortage of qualified healthcare professionals by setting up new medical institutes.
