Union Cabinet Approves 8 New Professional Colleges for Backward States; RUSA to Continue
- MHRD confirmed that the Union Cabinet granted approval for the continuation of RUSA scheme.
- Similarly, the Cabinet also gave approval for 70 new model degree colleges to be set up in educationally backward districts.
Last week, Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Mr. Prakash Javadekar announced that the Union Cabinet has given its approval for some of the major proposals made by the MHRD. The major approvals given by the Union Cabinet are elaborated below.

Major Approvals Given by Union Cabinet in Education Sector: -
- The Union Cabinet has agreed to continue RUSA (Rashtriya Uchchtar Shiksha Abhiyan) scheme.
- The outlay of RUSA has been increased to Rs. 7,100 crore for three years (2017-18 to 2018-20).
- Ten central or state universities with a NAAC score of above 3.5 will be granted Rs. 100 crore each under Graded Autonomy Scheme.
- Similarly, 20 states will be granted Rs. 50 crore each for creating research clusters in their respective states.
- 70 new model degree colleges will be set up in educationally backward districts. The government will provide a grant of Rs. 12 crores each for 70 new model degree colleges.
- The government will grant Rs. 4 crores each to 75 degree colleges to upgrade into model degree colleges.
- Educationally backward states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will get eight new professional colleges. Each professional college will be provided with a grant of Rs. 26 crores each.
- A total number of 750 colleges will be provided Rs. 2 crores each for upgrading academic infrastructures like the library, research labs, classrooms etc.
- A total number of 15 states will be allocated Rs. 5 crore each for setting up hostels for SC/ ST girl students.
