Universities in Kolkata to Implement UGC’s Choice Based Credit System
- CBCS system will provide students with the freedom to learn at their own pace and the entire assessment will be based on a credit system.

University Grants Commission ( UGC) has introduced the choice based credit system- CBCS. This credit system will offer students with a choice to choose core, soft skill or prescribed courses from the course list. This will provide students with an opportunity to learn at their own pace and the entire assessment will be based on a credit system.

This initiative is the idea of Partha Chatterjee, West Bengal Education Minister who asked vice-chancellors of the state universities to implement the Choice Based Credit System so that the students can choose the courses as per their choice. According to the sources, the number of holidays for teachers will reduce after implementation of CBCs. However, Chatterjee reacted to this saying that he has not asked to reduce the number of holidays of teachers.
UGC has introduced the choice credit based system in which the students will be provided with an option to choose from the prescribed course such as core, soft skill courses or elective. This medium will provide them with the freedom to learn at their own pace and it has already been started in the 10 universities of the state.

However, some state universities are facing a problem to start long distance programmes as they have less NAAC score. They have been advised to visit HRD ministry in order to take the approval from the UGC to be able to run long distance courses.
