Uttarakhand to Get Two New Universities
- Uttarakhand state government will soon earmark two places where the two new universities in Uttarakhand can be set up.
- The state requires two new universities to cater to the degree colleges.
Uttarakhand government is planning to set up two new universities in the state. The proposal about the establishment of the universities was discussed during the visit of Prakash Javadekar, Human Resource Development Minister on 1st June 2018.
Dhan Singh Rawat, Minister of State for Higher Education, informed the authorities that at present, there are 492-degree colleges in the state. As per the regulations of University Grants Commission, one university can only cater to 100 colleges and that is the reason the state required two more universities for this purpose.

The state government will soon earmark two places where these new universities can be established. He further said that the HRD ministry has accepted to relax norms of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for ten Himalayan states in the country.

NAAC grades colleges on the basis of the infrastructure, non-teaching staff, research activities in the colleges, the performance of the students, placement opportunities among others. At present, there are 100 government colleges in the state out of which 71 are undergraduate colleges and 29 colleges are postgraduate colleges The state has also been granted a budget of Rs.72 crore to work on the infrastructure and other important facilities in the colleges under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA).
The state government is also planning to ensure that every college must have at least two permanent faculty and clerical staff.
