Vice Chancellor Search Committee Formed for Calcutta University
The West Bengal Government has nominated Economist Abhirup Sarkar as a member of the vice-chancellor search committee of prestigious Calcutta's University.
The West Bengal Government has nominated Economist Abhirup Sarkar as a member of the vice-chancellor search committee of the prestigious Calcutta University. The government has also nominated two other members of the committee. They are Santanu Bhattacharya and Ved Prakash.

Ved Prakash is the Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) and has been nominated by Keshari Nath Tripathi, Chancellor and Governor of the state. He will be the chairman of the search committee. On the other hand, Santanu Bhattacharya is the Director of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science and a nominee of the Senate of Calcutta University.
For the appointment of vice-chancellor in the higher education department, the three-member search committee will propose the names in a sealed envelope. It will be then be passed on to the chancellor for selection.

Before that, Suranjan Das, Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University was nominated by the West Bengal Government as a member of the search committee. Das declined the proposal of the government. He called on the officials of the higher education department and said that he is still a teacher of Calcutta University and is looking forward to be appointed as a full-term VC of Jadavpur University. Therefore, it will not be practical for him to be part of the VC's search committee.
The Governor has also appointed Sankar Kumar Ghosh, who was previously working as a professor in Biotechnology department of Assam University, as the Vice-Chancellor of Kalyani University of Nadia district of West Bengal. He will continue to be in the post for a period of four- years. Earlier, the then Governor had re-appointed Sabyasachi Basu Roychowdhury as the full-term VC of prestigious and one of the oldest Universities of the country - Rabindra Bharati University.
