The Union Cabinet under the initiative of PM Narendra Modi granted ex-post facto approval for the establishment of NIT in Andhra Pradesh which has been registered as a Society under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001 with effect from 20th August 2015.
The Cabinet also approved the introduction of another Bill namely the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research (Amendment) Bill, 2016 for the inclusion of the NIT, AP in its First Schedule.
Now the NIT Andhra Pradesh will get a legal entity due to the post- facto approval of the Cabinet for the establishment of NIT, Andhra Pradesh as a society under the Societies Registration Act, 2001.
The proposed amendments to the NITSER Act, 2007 will ensure high levels of public accountability and increased participation of the. stakeholders in the administration and academic activities of the Institute.
NIT Andhra Pradesh is being funded by the Government of India. The Institute is being run and managed by their respective Society registered under the Andhra Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2001 till such time this Institute is brought under the National Institutes of Technology Science Education and Research Act 2007. After this, the accounts will be audited by the C & AG of India and will be laid in both the Houses of the Parliament.
It was a long pending demand of the state for an NIT. The Institute has been set up to cater to the needs of State of Andhra Pradesh. The state has no NIT till now. Now after the establishment of the NIT Andra Pradesh will in particular and the whole country in general will be benefitted. NIT- AP will be covered under the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007. The Institute will help in addressing the aspirations of people in the mainstream of technical education.
- NIT, Andhra Pradesh was established at the temporary campus of West Godavari District of the state.
- The State Government of Andhra Pradesh has provided land for NIT- at West Godavari District.
- About 50% of the seats in NITs are reserved for the eligible domicile students of States.
- It will ensure that the students of State of Andhra Pradesh will get adequate opportunities to pursue research at undergraduate, PG and and doctoral levels, in an inter-disciplinary knowledge regime and research environment.
The permanent site of NIT -AP has already been finalized at Air-Field lands of Tadepalligudem Mandal in West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh
