Calcutta University to Adopt Stricter Attendance Rules

Asutosh Ghosh, the vice-chancellor of the Calcutta University (CU) in an attempt to manage discipline announced that students will not be allowed to appear for the examinations without maintaining a minimum percentage of attendance.

The VC revealed that the university will strictly make sure that no student in post-graduate and undergraduate courses will be permitted to write their papers without having a certain minimum percentage of attendance. Although, he didn't specify the figure.

He further added that different institute follows different measures to deal with this issue. However, the Calcutta University will execute this rule strictly for taking care of regular absentees.

Citing examples of other educational institutes run by St. Xavier's College or Ramakrishna Mission, he said that these colleges can be the university's model to make students attend classes regularly.

When Ghosh was asked to compare the situation to the Presidency University where its VC, Anuradha Lohia, has banned any kind of political activity on the campus, he said that the number of students in Presidency University is much lower than CU. For instance, in the Presidency University, there are 30 to 40 students enrolled in the class of the Bengali department which is very less than the number students opting for Bengali in Calcutta University.

He further reacted to the trend at some of the colleges admitting more students than their limits, while mentioning that the Calcutta University has collected figures and it was found that few colleges have taken more number of students. The issue has been discussed with those colleges ensuring that it is not repeated again.
