Department of Telecommunications (DoT) Launches ‘5G Hackathon’

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to Launch ‘5G Hackathon' in association with the industries, government organizations, and academic agencies. Winners will receive prize money of 2.5 Crore.

Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched the ‘5G Hackathon’ to promote 5G the application of 5G technology in India. The Hackathon is launched in association with a number of stakeholders, academic industry and government organisations like the Electronics and Information Technology Ministry, Niti Aayog, the Department of Science and Technology, The MSME Ministry, Digital India, Startup India, KPMG, the India Mobile Congress, IIT’s / IIIT’s to name a few.

The Hackathon will be organised in three phases and the prize money for the same is Rs 2.5 crore. The event began on February 21st. The felicitation ceremony will be held on October 16, 2020, at India Mobile Congress.

The participants will have to present the implementation of 5G applications that can be presented in the market with support from leading industry, DoT, MeitY, Telcos, OEM’s and Academic institutes. They can develop products/ solutions under 10 categories like Education and Governance, Healthcare, Environment, SmartCity and Infrastructure, Banking, Finance and Insurance, Cyber Security, Multimedia, Transportation and Logistics to name a few.

Mobile Operator Association, COAI in an address to the people said that 5G technology is an approach to offer better speed, data transfer rate, efficiency in the usage of spectrum and improvement in latency. The idea of organising ‘5G Hackathon’ is to encourage innovative ideas and come up with solutions which will apparently help the nation to use the 5G technology.

The Hackathon will be organised in various stages. First, candidates will have to submit ideas. The best 100 ideas will be selected. The selected ones will get support from the Hackathon partners and the product/ solution will be developed. 30 products/ solutions will be selected and tested on a 5G network followed by the facilitation.3 best product/ solutions will be presented during India Mobile Congress in October 2020. The prize money of 2.5 crores will be distributed among the winners.
