Engineering Students to Rate Teachers from 2019-20 Session: AICTE

Students across 10,400 engineering colleges in India will rank their teachers as per a new teachers’ ranking parameters which will be introduced from the new academic year starting from 2019-20. The parameters will include factors such as if the teacher was able to complete the syllabus, if the content was effective and how efficient the teacher was in communicating things to the students, the pace of the teacher etc.

The All India Council of Technical Education known (AICTE) has chalked down some other parameters also to evaluate a teacher’s performance. A teacher in AICTE approved technical institutions will be rated for departmental activities, annual confidential reporInstituteute activities as well as contributions to the society.

M.P. Poonia, the Vice-chairman of AICTE has said that there is now a process to make teachers’ rating system more broad-based. Earlier, the teachers’ rating system was limited to publications and numbers, but now, the focus is being shifted to the effectiveness of their teaching.

Student’s feedback to teachers has been set at 25 marks out of 100 marks of the teacher evaluating scale. Out of the 25 marks, 10 marks will be allocated for the institute and departmental activities, and 10 for ACR and Social Activities.

Poonia suggested that the effect of the new rating system will kick in for assessment of the teachers from 2022-23 as the teachers' assessment on the basis of student’s rankings will be on the basis of a three-year period. AICTE has issued two notifications related to this matter.

A former University Grant Council or UGC member, Inder Mohan Kapahy has supported this decision and is in favour of a 360-degree rating process of teachers which will eventually lead to academic excellence.
