In a recent announcement, it was declared that more than 150 engineers holding Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) and Master of Technology (M.Tech) degrees have been roped in for the position of Constables in the Punjab Police.
These engineers have been hired in the Information Technology (IT) and Intelligence wing of the Punjab Police. Each of these engineers had to undergo a nine-month training to be finally hired for the posts, revealed Mr. Rajpal Singh Sandhu who was the Commandant of the Training Centre.

IG (Intelligence) Mr. Ram Singh participated in the passing out of the parade of the 257 trainees and took the salute at march past from the contingent. He advised all the constables to work with full dignity and take charge of their duties and aim to maintain the reputation of Punjab Police.
While further elaborating, he said that the training centre has imparted training in physical exercises, weapon handling, drills and shooting, besides teaching subjects like law, IT and intelligence to over 60,000 constables since its inception in the year 1993.

This is an example of how employment opportunities for engineers in the country is in a bad state right now. On one hand, many students are applying for engineering courses year after year, the number of seats in engineering colleges are lying vacant or graduates are resorting to other job profiles such as the one described here.
