IGNOU Sets Up Study Centre For Women At AGDC

The Indira Gandhi National Open University has recently established a regular study centre for women candidates at the Avadh Girls’ Degree College. The centre will be made functional from July. This is the second study centre established in the region for fostering women’s empowerment through education by IGNOU.

IGNOU’s regional director Manorama Singh said that the study centre would cater to the academic requirements of women students residing in Gomti Nagar, Cantonment, Vrindavan Yojana and other adjoining areas.

This full-fledged study centre has been allocated 19 academic programmes with four Masters’ level ones. The IGNOU regional centre earlier conducted two awareness programmes in the college and after having feedbacks from students and teachers, masters in English, Anthropology, Philosophy and Rural Development have been activated. Besides, programmes like Creative Writing, Tourism Studies, NGO Management, Teaching of English and Translation Studies have also been allotted to the Centre as these courses may not only add value to the knowledge of the students’ community but will also provide new career options.

The teachers of the college, who will be acting as academic counsellors for distance learners, have also been sensitised about the Open and Distance Learning Philosophy and teaching pedagogy. Principal, Avadh Girls’ Degree College, Upma Chaturvedi said that the IGNOU Centre for Women would be very beneficial for students studying in the college as they could pursue shortterm courses simultaneously with their graduation.

Assistant regional director Anshuman Upadhyaya said that by an analysis of the last few years’ admission data, it had been observed that women participation in rural development programmes had increased hence both one-year postgraduate diploma and two-year Masters’ programme in rural development had been activated at the centre.

The admissions for the July cycle-2016 have been declared open and the admission application forms are available at the IGNOU Study Centre, Avadh Girls Degree College.
