IIT Kharagpur Exploring Possibilities for B.Tech Admission without JEE Exam

IIT Kharagpur is set to introduce a new B.Tech admission route from 2026, allowing entry without JEE scores for top performers in Olympiads and sports. Eligible candidates will apply through the institute’s portal.

IIT Kharagpur to Provide Admission to B.Tech. without JEE Score from 2026: In a major step towards providing more access to the world-class education facilities in IIT, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur is planning to bring in new mode for admission to its B.Tech courses from the academic session 2026-27 making the remarkable, students eligible for admission even without JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) scores .

The institute is reportedly considering alternative admission routes aimed at recognising and rewarding exceptional talent in sports, Olympiads, and innovation contests. Many bright students who shine in other fields like science olympiads or sports get left out because of the heavy competition. This drive aims to foster a more diverse and well-rounded student body by recognising accomplishments beyond conventional academic achievement.

Under this proposal, two new categories of admissions may be introduced. The first is the Science Olympiad Excellence Admission (SCOPE) that will award students who have represented India in international Olympiads in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Informatics. The second is Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) for students who have excelled in sports at the national or international level. These aspirants might get special preference for the B.Tech seats.

IIT Kharagpur B.Tech Admission 2026: Eligibility Criteria

There are some qualifications students must have to apply under the new routes.

Must possess a strong performance in international or national Olympiads.
Sports candidates must have represented the State or Country in recognised events.
Candidates should have passed class 12 with relevant subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics).
Should be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced examination.

After the release of the notification, candidates have to apply on the IIT Kharagpur admission portal and upload the particulars of their Olympiad or sports achievement along with valid proof. The institute may also invite shortlisted candidates for verification/interview. Based on the evaluation, a final merit list will be made on the basis of eligibility and performance. The shortlisted students will then be given admission offers for the B. Tech 2026 session.
