IITs Likely to Add 1,000 Seats from Next Academic Session

Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are planning to add over 1,000 seats in engineering courses from the next academic session. The additional seats will enable more engineering aspirants to seek admission in the prime engineering institutes of the country through the JEE Main and JEE Advanced exams. An official of HRD Ministry indicated that the majority of the additional seats will be added through the new IITs. The following IITs from across the country are likely to get additional seats for engineering courses: -

  • IIT Gandhinagar
  • IIT Indore
  • IIT Bhubaneswar
  • IIT Jodhpur
  • IIT Ropar
  • IIT Hyderabad
  • IIT Mandi

On the other hand, old IITs which include IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi etc. will witness only a marginal increase in the number of seats which are offered in different streams of engineering courses/ specialisations.

The current academic session of 2017-18 also witnessed the IITs adding 480 additional seats. Hence, at present, all the IITs across the country together offer 10,998 seats. With the additional seats coming up from next year, a total of about 12,000 seats will be available at the IITs. In order to accommodate these students on campus and classrooms, construction and renovation activities have also been lined up at the newer IITs that are gaining pace and nearing completion.

Furthermore, in order to increase gender parity at IITs, the HRD Ministry is already in the process of devising ways and ideas through which more female candidates will be enrolled in the IITs.

As per the Joint Admission Board which conducts counselling for IIT seats, it was revealed that over 121 seats in IITs remained vacant even after the seven rounds of counselling, which was more than 2016 (96 seats) and 2015 (50 seats). It has also been observed that the total number of seats left vacant in IITs has continuously been increasing year after year.
