While addressing the university and college students across the country on 2nd March 2019 in the Smart India Hackathon at IIT Roorkee, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India ranked 81 in the Global Innovation Index in 2014 but now the country has reached 57th position. PM Modi said that the country jumped 24 notches in just 4 years, the country is now the world’s third-largest start-up today and will make it to the top 25 of the Global Innovation Index soon.
Stating the reason behind this escalation, PM Modi said that the new India is making its mark in the world through its culture of innovation, start-ups, and entrepreneurship and that this must go on to reach greater heights.
While addressing the young participants of the Smart India Hackathon, Modi suggested the students think of hyper-local solutions that will help vegetable and fruit vendors in delivering goods via an online marketplace model. He also suggested them to come up with ideas to deal with child and women safety related issues with technology-driven solutions.
Some of the participants also put forth their ideas for tackling the difficulties faced by students with learning disabilities, differently abled, farmers and malnourished children through technology-driven solutions. To strengthen this further, Modi gave more ideas on how these could be used to solve societal difficulties and how challenges can be overcome with the power of technology and innovation.
Smart India Hackathon is now seen as the nation's largest national level open innovation model which brings together the educational institutes, industry, government agencies, students and professionals all together under one roof. Since its inception in 2107, Hackathon has grown, it began with 30,000 students and now the number is close to 2 lakh participants.
