The Delhi High Court has stayed the admission for M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes in the 5% unfilled seats for students with disabilities in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). As per the reports, Justice C Hari Shankar and Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal stated that there will be no effect in JNU admission for to the five percent unfilled seats for especially disabled persons for M.Phil/ Ph.D. programmes.

The bench was informed that the academic year is to start in the last month of July, therefore, the hearing for the same will continue by 21 May 2018. They were hearing a petition filed by National Federation of the Blind. As per the petition, the admission policy of JNU for the academic year 2018-19 demand 100% weightage to the viva voice examination which is totally inconsiderate and unfair on the university’s part and there must be some relaxation in the admission procedure.

Apart from this, National Federation of Blind has challenged the university’s decision not to grant any weightage to the written examination. They also claimed that the university did not provide any relaxation to persons with disabilities in the JNU entrance examination as well despite statutory prescription. As per the university brochure, 5% of the total seats offered in M.Phil/ Ph.D. courses have to be kept reserved for persons with disabilities but the administration did not pay any attention to the same.
