A student of Lucknow University has designed a solar-powered trash compactor which will not only help compress waste for easy disposal but also give new dimensions to waste management.
A student at the centre of excellence in renewable energy education and research at Lucknow University's Sitapur Road campus, Sidra Khatoon has designed the dustbin under the guidance of Prof Usha Bajpai.
“The solar bin will not only help in efficient waste ma nagement but will also help reduce the burden of sanitation workers, as they would not have to empty bins frequently,“ said Bajpai, the coor dinator of the centre.
The bin can compress approximately 5kg of household garbage dumped into it. A final-year student of renewable energy, Khatoon has fabricated and tested the dustbin.
“This innovation can be helpful for the Smart City programme. The size and the capacity of the dustbin can be increased according to the amount of waste that needs to be compressed,“ said Khatoon. It can be used both in a public place and in homes and modified for bio degradable and non-bio degradable waste, she added.
