Prakash Javadekar, in an interview, recently said that the HRD ministry has received more than one lakh suggestions on the NCERT syllabus reduction. He also addressed other questions on UGC funding, HEFA, quality of education in the country, IoE status etc. Read more below.
Minister of Human Resource Development, Mr. Prakash Javadekar while interacting to a reporter of leading newspaper daily on the occasion of Teachers’ Day addressed dome of the issues pertaining to the education sector such as faculty recruitment, syllabus deduction, institutes of eminence etc.
With respect to the steps being taken to improve the standard of education in the country, Javadekar stressed on the fact that when one does not get admission in any of the popular courses like law, engineering and medical, he/she decides to opt for any course and then become a teacher. In order to change this mindset, the government has introduced specialized courses such as B.A. (B.Ed), B.Sc (B.Ed) and B.Com (B.Ed) so that candidates are trained in such a way that become good teachers in the future. Apart from that, the authorities are also investing intensively in teacher training programmes so as to improve the standards of education.
On being asked whether there will be any reduction in the NCERT syllabus, he said that the HRD Ministry has already received more than one lakh suggestions from all over the country with respect to the same. He said that the process will take up to two to three years and will be implemented in phases from the next academic year.

Further, speaking about the IoE status granted to institutes, Javadekar once again clarified that there are three categories of IoE institutes - government, private as well as greenfield. He said that those institutes which have a vision (like the Jio Institute) have been given a letter of intent, however, on the basis of their performance in the next three years, these institutes will be granted the actual IoE status.

Elaborating on the HEFA - Higher Education Funding Agency, he said that when UGC was formed it was given the responsibility of regulating as well as managing funds for higher education institutes in the country. He added this was a doable job since the number of universities and colleges, as well as the number of students, was less as compared to what it is today. Hence, the government has proposed to separate these two functions and keep the regulatory authority with UGC and roll out finances to HEFA.
