President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the ninth convocation of Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry in Nauni, Himachal Pradesh on 22nd May 2018, which also happens to be Asia’s first horticultural university. President Kovind spoke about the different ways of increasing the income of farmers and how the development of rural India is the country’s top priority.
The Parmar University in Horticulture and Forestry has played a significant role with respect to the advancement of horticulture and forestry in the state.
According to him, the goal of education should be not limited to getting a job. Students should widen their prospects and shall start their own enterprises by using their skills. He said that there is a lot of potential in the field of fruit and vegetable processing. Graduates should utilize their knowledge so that they can help farmers get better value for their products.

While addressing the audience, he talked about research in horticulture and forestry and how it is significant for farmers in hilly areas such as Himachal Pradesh. He also congratulated the students for choosing agriculture sector for higher education and for contributing to agricultural sector which is a backbone of our country.

He concluded by saying that he expects each student and teacher of the university to be a technically-equipped friend to the farmers of Himachal Pradesh and offer them assistance whenever required. This will help them to learn new ways to make their products more valuable and sellable.
