Students of IIT Roorkee Invent Low Cost Cooling Technology

Two students from IIT Roorkee have attracted the attention of many in ‘Go Green in the City 2017’ competition that took place in Paris recently. The students have developed a low-cost earthenware cooling technology, ‘Evacool’. The innovation made by these students bagged the top spot in the competition. The main objective of the event was to promote innovative solutions for smarter and energy efficient cities.

Raja Jain and Nimisha Gupta, students of Chemical Engineering course at IIT Roorkee, made the country and the institute proud with their innovation. Explaining about their cooling technology, Raja Jain said that the current cooling solutions like air conditioner, air cooler and ceiling fan do hot have any impact and these are resource-heavy in nature. These devices have limited users, as affordability is the major concern among the people.

Adding further, Raja Jain mentioned that they had designed ‘Evacool’ to overcome all the limitations. The device is highly cost-effective, and it consumes lesser electricity. The major highlight of the device is that it does not emit toxic gases and it is highly eco-friendly.

Nimisha Gupta pointed that the device was developed considering the society’s low strata. Each unit of Evacool costs around Rs. 4,000. The device plays a vital role in minimising the temperature by “10 degree Celsius’.

‘Go Green in the City 2017’ competition witnessed over 19,772 applications from 180 countries. Among the total number of participants, 12 finalists were shortlisted. Finally, the team from IIT Roorkee emerged as the winner of the competition.
